Why I Am Running
It is time to pause major development in Decatur and create a cohesive plan for what our City will become.
When I helped form the Downtown Decatur Neighbors in 2014, we had an inkling of what was coming to Decatur. 600 apartments were about to be built. We were concerned about the impact of growth upon our quality of life - and the lost opportunity to create new parks and public amenities in our community. Those apartments are complete. Another 700 are under construction. More are planned.
But there still is no plan for the infrastructure to support all this development. We see the impact in traffic, stormwater, loss of trees and a the stunning growth of student enrollment in our schools.
Our City is a special and unique community that continues to draw new residents and investment. It is essential that we maintain the character that makes Decatur special while appropriately integrating the growth that keeps our City vibrant. We need to be intentional. We need to pause and plan what we want Decatur to become.
